Here are some points to remember when writing a cover letter:
In the opening paragraph, write the title of the job you are applying for and be specific about where and how you come to know about the concerned position or the company.
Try to find out the title and name of the person who is going to hire you and use the proper name, instead of writing just "Dear Madam" or "Dear Sir."
Write the cover letter exactly based on what the job listing or advertisement says the employer is looking out for; try giving an example from your prevoius experiences for all qualifications listed in the advertisement.
Type the cover letter and use paper and font that is the same or looks similar to your resume paper. Always sign your name after the cover letter.
Read the letter carefully several times before sending and check for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. Try to have it proofread by someone else.
Keep the letter short and brief--no more than one page. Keep the paragraphs limited to three-four sentences each.
Remember to enclose the resume.
Include your contact number in the closing paragraph.
Always make sure that the envelope is properly and clearly addressed.
