In an academic life, a student has to write different types of application letters, request letters and appeal letters. A student appeal letter is written in many different cases. A student can appeal for financial aid to the school authorities, or can appeal the faculty to reconsider his/her grades in case the student feels that the grades are not appropriate. To understand how a student can appeal using these letters, we would consider two different student appeal letter samples. Prior to this, let us discus some tips or instruction on writing an appeal letter.

How to write an appeal letter?

Format of the letter:

Formal letter format
Font - Times New Roman or Arial, font size 12

Content of the letter:

  1. Header - Appellants details.
  2. Reader's details
  3. Re - This is the subject line. It gives the reference of the case or letter you wish to appeal for
  4. First paragraph - Introduction of the appellant and the appeal
  5. Second paragraph - Elaborates on the appeal and states the facts or evidences supporting the appellants' appeal
  6. Third Paragraph - Conclusion of the letter, which summarizes the letter and thanks the reader

The appeal letter is supported with the related facts and evidences. If you challenge certain decision, action, or announcement, you must have the needful evidences supporting the same. These evidences or facts make your appeal stronger, and forces the reader to change his/her decision.

The two sample letters given below are written in two different situations. In the first appeal letter, the student appeals to reconsider the grades. Here she challenges the decision. The second appeal letter is a request letter for financial aid. Read the samples given below for further clarification.

Re: Thesis no - 10254
Dear Mr. Peter,

I am Martha Mill, a student of Class 8B and I appeal you to reconsider my grades in Science for this semester.

I have scored 58% in this subject and I believe that there has been some error on your part. I have not been assigned scores of the thesis report I submitted. I had submitted this report after the submission date. However, I had discussed this with you, and you had given me an extension of three days. I have attached that approval letter. As per this, my thesis should be accepted and I should get grades for the same.

Please reconsider the grades as this will affect my final semester score, and read the approval letter given by you, for delayed submission.

Thank you

Regards,
Martha Mill

Re: Appeal for financial aid

Dear Ms. Bill,

I am Martha Mill, and I appeal for financial aid as it is becoming difficult for me to complete my course. My first semester at Paul has ended, and I did not score well. I work for 40+ hours every week due to my financial constraints, and this has hampered my studies. I wish to enroll in Paul Master's college for further studies, and if I fail to get a financial aid now, it would be difficult for me.

I will now concentrate more on my academics. For this, I have decided to reduce my work hours and thus it would affect my income. I would thus need financial aid to complete my studies. Since work was hampering my studies, I now wish to give it a back seat and focus on my studies. I would now work for 32-36 hours a week. Without the financial aid from the college, it would be almost impossible for me to pursue my studies further. Education is the most important for me and I would not compromise on it.

I hope you would consider my appeal and help me continue with my education with the help of the college financial aid.

Thank you in anticipation.

Regards,
Martha Mill
