A work application letter is a letter sent along with the resume by the applicant. It is similar to a cover letter. The purpose of this letter is to highlight the resume of the applicant, and make his/her application more attractive. It simplifies the reader's job by giving him/her the required information for which he/she would have to read the entire resume. This simplification of his/her task creates a positive impression on the reader, and helps him/her make better decisions about your application. The format of a work application letter is same like any other application letter. The only difference in a job or work application letter, and a general application letter is that the work application letter resembles a cover letter, and gives details on your skills and experience.

How to write a work application letter?

  • The work application letter is written to apply for the job. It should thus mention clearly the position the applicant wishes to apply for.
  • The letter begins with the header. The header consists of the date, name of the applicant, postal address, email address and contact number.
  • The header is followed by the name and address of the reader leaving a tab space.
  • After addressing the letter to a specific person, the next important part is the subject line. The subject of the application letter is very important because the reader gets a clear idea of what you want from him/her. The subject line is one short sentence. In case of work application letter, the subject line will be 'Application for the post of ________'.
  • Greeting the reader is again an important part. Dear Mr./Ms. (followed by the last name). When you write Mr./Ms., it should always be followed by the last name of the person. If you do not know who exactly reads your application in that particular department, you can write a general greeting 'Dear Sir/Madam'.
  • The first paragraph of the letter will consist of your name and the post you applied for.
  • The second paragraph will elaborate on your skills, qualification and experience, to make you look suitable for this position.
  • The third paragraph will mention the documents you are sending along with the application letter. Make sure you send all the required documents, so that your application is processed further easily.
  • Thank the reader, sign the letter and close the letter.
  • Enclosures: In this section, mention the documents you have attached in the right sequence, so that the reader checks all the documents correctly.
