Many times the banks indulge in levying high charges on unauthorized payments and add to it their high rates of interest. They never reveal this to the customer until the end of the month when these charges have accumulated to unsavory amounts. Like this, there are many other problems such as unjustified delays in check clearing, delay in issue of bank statement or pass book, etc. These incidents should not be left unreported. A complaint letter directly addressing the bank manager must be written with all the accurate details included.

The number of unhappy bank customers is increasing day by day and they are dragging their banks to courts. Lately, there has been a surge in the number of cases being won by the customers resulting in the banks paying fines of a handsome tune. However the step preceding a legal notice is to send a complaint letter to the bank's manager asking for an immediate redressal of the issue at hand. A fixed deadline needs to be mentioned post which you can sue the bank.

Subject- Complaint about delayed check clearance

Dear Robin,

I am writing to you under the most unfortunate circumstances for which, I am afraid, I have to hold your bank responsible. I had deposited a check under local clearance at your Dunlop St. branch last month which, strangely has not been yet credited to my account. The details are as follows:

Bank A/c no- 382006500129
A/c type- Savings a/c
Bank Branch- Dunlop St.
Date of deposit of check- 23rd September '11
Check no. - 42002

Since I deposited the check on 23rd September, '11, it shouldn't have taken more than 3 days for it to get credited to my account. This was a payment from my tenant and I wished to meet some urgent requirements with that money. When at the end of three days, the amount didn't reach my account, I called the bank and was told by Mr. Scott that it will be credited by that very evening and that the delay was only because of some minor technical glitch. So I waited for the evening but still no money reached my account. Out of fear of a check theft, I called the personal relations officer at your office, Mr. Marshal, who looked in to the matter at hand and told me that their system showed that the processing was pending and so it would take at least another 2 days as there was a weekend coming in between. Like this, I have been kept waiting for my own money and it's been a week now.

I have been a customer of this bank for the last 10 years and never ever before have I faced such a situation. I am worried about what has happened to my check. The latest update from your side is that the check seems to have been misplaced somewhere. They only have the bank slip pinned by me on it and no check. I am thoroughly exasperated at the manner of your handling of my case. I hope you, being in a higher position with so many years of experience, can understand my situation. If the check was indeed lost, why was I not told before when I first inquired about it. The information was withheld from me which, in the first place, should have been my right to know.

I am attaching a copy of my part of the check slip with this letter as a proof and I expect that this completely uncalled for situation will be resolved in the next two working days.

Looking forward to your kind co-operation.

Yours Sincerely

(Signature)
