A formal business letter is a letter that is sent by one business organization to another for official purposes like sales letter, business introduction letter, business transaction letter, termination letter, etc. it is written in a formal, industry standard format.

A formal business letter has to have a proper flow and indent, size, bolds, underlines, italics and color, all need to be taken care of. Some of the important tips to be followed while writing such a letter are:

  • Use only one font size throughout the letter
  • Don't use varied colors in the letter. If need be use not more than two colors-one being black and the other of your choice (the second color should be smooth on eyes for reading)
  • Maintain a uniform indent of the entire letter
  • Usage of bolds or italics should be minimum and justified

Notice the flow and tone of the above letter. The writer establishes the reason behind the letter right in the beginning without wasting any space or time. This is done to cut the letter short and crisp as there is no space for unneeded pleasantries in business letters. The letter should be written in a tone as you, actually, would have spoken.
