A good act, gesture, task, etc., should be applauded. This appreciation is a must to make the doer feel that his/her acts make a difference, or are worth being recognized. However, when an individual does something that needs to be appreciated, his/her task of appreciation might not be known to everyone. Thus, the people around him/her who have the authority to get such acts appreciated by awards and rewards write an award recommendation letter that recommends a particular person for a particular award.

We have seen advertisements wherein a particular organizer asks whether you know anyone who has done some act of bravery, humanity or intelligence, then write to us and we will applaud their acts. This is also a kind of indirect appreciation, wherein you present certain names for certain awards. Some others who have the authority, directly recommend some individuals for a particular award by writing these letters; for example, a school principal could recommend a student for a particular scholarship award; a Senator could recommend someone from his colony for some bravery award; someone could recommend a social worker for extra ordinary social work towards the society, etc. The Principal, Senator, etc., thus have the required authority to recommend an individual for a particular award, based on their judgment and observation.

Writing an Award recommendation letter:

  1. Verify your facts before you recommend someone. Also, make sure whether you have the authority to recommend someone.
  2. Check whether there is an award for a particular category that you wish to recommend the candidate for. There might not be a specific award, but a generalized category as a whole.
  3. Keep your facts ready to justify your recommendation
  4. Addressing the letter to the right person is important. Recommending someone for a bravery award and sending the letter to someone working for social elevation of the society would be irrelevant.

Contents of the letter:

If you are confused about the information in the letter, reading the instructions given below will answer your queries.

  1. Name of the candidate
  2. Name of the award you recommend for the candidate
  3. Justification of your recommendation by stating what the candidate has done
  4. Further justification on why the particular candidate deserves the award
  5. Closing the letter by thanking the reader, and requesting him/her to consider the recommendation put forth

Subject: Recommendation of James Joy for the 'Bravery Awards' to be held on 15th December 2011

Dear Mr. Baker,

With the instructions of my boss Mr. Polo, Congressman - Downtown, I recommend Mr. James Joy for Bravery Awards, 2011. Mr. Joy's acts of bravery have made us proud, and we wish to thank him for his bravery by conferring this award on him.

Mr. Joy is a commoner, but his acts have made him uncommon today. He is a true example of an alert and responsible citizen. Mr. Joy's alertness and bravery saved the lives of 3 school children. On 10th November, while Mr. Joy was traveling from his house towards the office in a tram, he saw three school children aged between 8-12 years. The children were in the same tram, and after sometime, a stranger entered the tram. He tried to lure the children but Mr. Joy was skeptic about this guy. He followed them when they got down from the tram, and later he saw the man trying to kidnap the children and sexually assault them. Mr. Joy single-handedly fought with this person and saved the children. The names of the children have not been disclosed for the sake of privacy.

Mr. Joy's act of bravery saved three little children. Mr. Polo wants to convey a message to the society that staying alert can help stop crime. He thus wishes to recommend Mr. Joy for this Bravery Award.

I thus, request you to consider the same, and applaud the acts of this brave citizen. Enclosed please find the details of Mr. Joy.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Regards,

Rose CarrieMr. Jim Polo
