Reference Letter For Internship

Many degree courses and professional courses, require the student to undergo an internship as a part of their curriculum. On successful completion of the internship, the student gets his/her degree. However, getting in an organization as an intern is not very simple. Organizations, wouldn't just allow anyone to come and work with them. Thus, many times a recommendation is needed. The person willing to recommend someone can do so by writing a reference letter for internship. This letter would help a student to strengthen his/her application, to work as an intern with some organization.

Courses like medical, management, engineering, etc., make it compulsory for the student to work as an intern. This is because, the theoretical concepts are of no use, unless put to application. These internships not only help the students to understand everything in practical application, but might also give them a chance to prove themselves, and get a job in the organization where they are pursuing their internship. Organizations take interns that are capable and promising, and if they succeed in proving themselves, then they can be recruited by the organization. We would discuss internship reference letters, further by reading a few samples, considering two different scenarios. In the first scenario, we would see a student requesting for a referral letter, and in the second, a person recommending someone for internship.

Both the letters need to be written keeping in mind the purpose of the letter -

Requesting for referral:

Here the person writing the letter wishes that the reader/the person to whom the letter is addressed to, to write a recommendation for him/her so that he/she can work as an intern with some organization.

Reference letter for internship:

This is a recommendation letter written by a person to recommend someone to an organization, to take the particular person as an intern in the organization. It can thus, be considered as the outcome of the referral request letter.

Tone of the letter:

In both the letters, the tone of the letter will be formal. The letter should be written as per the formal letter writing guidelines, and should have a clear subject line mentioning the purpose of the letter.

Reading the sample letters given below will help clarify the concept further

Subject: Recommendation for Internship

Dear Mr. Sanders,

I am Lahoma Garette, hope you remember me. We had met at the USA HR Meet, 2010. I was then working with GreyMount Productions Ltd. I have now taken a retirement, and am enjoying my life after so many years of hard work. My purpose of writing this letter is requesting you to take my niece as an intern in your organization.

Sara Williams is studying Management from the St. Peters School of Management studies. She is doing her majors in Human Resources, and I wish to recommend her for the internship program in your organization. Sara is a bright child, with an excellent academic record throughout. She has a keen interest in this particular field, and works hard to be the best at her work. As a part of her curriculum, she needs to work as an intern, and I believe that no one else other than you can be a good mentor for her in this field.

Mr. Sanders, I had appreciated you for the way you spoke on the various issues and concepts related to Human Resource in that meet. I thus, believe that working in your guidance will help my niece understand this vast field, and give in her best. I have enclosed her resume, a copy of the letter from her college, and a small presentation made by her on Human Resource Concepts. Please look into the same, and consider my request.

Thank you.

Regards, Lahoma Garrett
