Higher education should certainly not remain the privilege of only the top, affluent section of society. Intelligence does not recognise any class barriers and therefore deserving students must get an opportunity to study further even if they do not have the resources. Grants and scholarships come to the rescue of such students who are high on merit and nurture big dreams but lack the funds to afford higher education.

Therefore students who need monetary assistance to pursue advanced studies in the field of their choice have the option of applying for a scholarship. This can be done either online or by sending a well worded, convincing letter that would fetch you the desired results. A letter requesting for scholarship should reflect your sincerity as that would indicate to your benefactor that the funds would be put to good use by a deserving student.

Some useful tips to help you frame an effective high school scholarship letter:

  • Stick to the conventional format: It is better not to experiment with the layout and fonts and keep to the traditional format of business or formal letters
  • After introducing yourself, state in a matter of fact manner why you need financial assistance. Explain how the money would be used and how it will help you to achieve your goals
  • Provide proof of your financial constraints by enclosing the tax return and other relevant documents so that it would apprise your benefactor of your situation
  • Give evidence of your academic excellence by mentioning your grades and other achievements

Before you begin framing the letter, you would need to find the sources from where you could seek financial aid. Gather all your personal information so that you have it all in one place when you need to refer to it while writing your letter. The sample below is sure to guide you to write your own high school scholarship letter.

Dear Mrs Sawyer,

I write this letter to appeal for financial assistance that would enable me to pursue higher studies. My name is Betty Downard and I have just completed high school. I wish to continue to study further but unfortunately do not have the means to afford it. My father is a construction worker who had taken a loan for my brother's education. He is now in deep financial hardship and is unable to repay the same. I have enclosed details of his financial statements for your perusal.

I have always been academically inclined and have done extremely well in all school exams. My grades have always been in the "excellent" range and I know that if given an opportunity, I will be able to scale greater heights. It is my ambition to be a skilled and expert neurosurgeon and achieve new frontiers in this amazing field. However, I have to cross many hurdles before I can even see my dream on the horizon. The biggest obstacle for me is the lack of monetary resources.

I therefore sincerely appeal to you to grant me a scholarship so that my avenues for further studies don't close in on me. I assure you that I would make the best possible use of this opportunity and work hard to realise my goals. I would be grateful if you could consider my request and help me overcome my difficulties and give myself a chance to be successful.

Thank you for having spared the time to consider my appeal.

Yours sincerely,

Betty Downard
